Don’t Horse It!

It’s hard to believe it has been four years since Dad was reunited with Grandma and Grandpa Rudie, sister Jean, best friend Jack, and his other friends from a lifetime of adventures.

Life has continued on, as it does, but it looks a whole lot different than it did on March 24, 2020. Although it has been 4 years’ time, I feel the more appropriate measurement is that we have traveled 2.3 billion miles rocketing through space in orbit around the sun since then. Some days it feels like we’re the windshield of Earth, getting hit with bugs flying at 67,000 MPH. Some days it feels like we’re trying to walk 584 million miles in an endless loop with no destination, than where we began.

Other days though, we get to sit. We get to be still. And with no wind, no clouds, and nowhere to go, we see no movement. We feel no speed. It is there that we realize we are the ones who get to choose our speed. We decide how fast to walk, or how quick to do. We decide how high to jump. We get to choose the Honeycrisp or the Granny Smith. How we enjoy our life is our choice. The Earth is moving fast enough. We’ll get to where we’re going exactly on time, exactly how we’re supposed to. There’s no need to rush it.

Dad always took the time to choose the scenic route and stop at that overlook. He took the time to capture the moment in photos. He took pause to watch the sunset, and appreciate those fleeting moments of light. Maybe he knew the secret to life was not the rush of it all, to do the most things. It’s about going slow and feeling the most things. Because when we’re moving at 67,000 miles an hour, it’s really easy to let the days, months, and years slip past like a raindrop on your window. He would want all of us to just slow down and pick up that cool rock, and take the road trip, don’t fly. To hell with your shortcut, take the longcut. And go try that new fishing hole in the back bay where no one goes but by golly, just “Don’t Horse ‘it!”.

Some days you still help us on projects, and some days we walk 2.3 billion miles. Whatever day it will be, we love you and miss you in all of them!
